FOSSGIS Conference 2006

http://www.fossgis.org hosts the Wiki of the German language Free and Open Source Software Gesopatial Information Systems conference 2006. The German language sibling of the UMN MapServer User Meeting 2004 in Ottawa, Canada, the OSG '05 Conference in Minneapolis, USA and FOSS4G 2006 conference in Lausanne, Switzerland is taking palce for the fourth time, this year again in Bonn, Germany on March 29 and 30, 2006.

Program Development and CFP 06

The program has been developed collaboratively using Wiki technology. This method has first been adopted at the UMN MapServer Anwenderkonferenz 05 last year and the user community unanimously (see title 3.4) voted for doing it again this year.

The program lists 40 presentations and 12 workshops that are going to be presented in parallel sessions over two days. On the first day several Free and Open Source Software developer meetings take place in the afternoon where users, developers and sponsors can discuss further development face to face. After these community and development sessions a humble reception and event will give people a chance to get to know each other personally and to continue discussion on open issues.

Find out more about the programm in the Wiki.

Workshops - Learning and Funding

Eleven workshops give a chance to receive firsthand information on the inner workings of many software packages and architectural designs. The scope of the workshops ranges from basic introductions (UMN MapServer, the original), gives insights to Java software implementations (iGeoPortal, GeoServer WFS-T), touches the GRASS world and addresses security issues in Spatial Data Infrastructures. Workshop fees amount to €99,- each and in addition with the funding provided by 16 sponsors (companies and institutions alike) allow for the main event to be free of cost to attend!

FOSSGIS and FOSS4G conferences

The FOSSGIS conference 2006 is explicitly trying to not stand in the way of the FOSS4G conference. The FOSS4G 2006 (http://www.foss4g2006.org/) is the official meeting of the tribes! Last year the German speaking user community insisted on having a local user meeting, so this is why there is another conference with a similar name. The FOSSGIS conference takes place at the end of March instead of September to not collide with the FOSS4G conference.

Future Planning of FOSSGIS Conferences

The next generation conferences will be planned and coordinated by a committee of the Open Source Geospatial Foundation.
